I also have emails sent by 2-3 really close friends forwarded to my phone using a filter in gmail. I then stop by DC or DP and reply to their emails, often within an hour.

There is no charge on the sending end, but on the receiving end, this is as "free" as your incoming text messages - which aren't necessarily.
