Mind of an Undergrad Entrepreneur: Operating System Woes (Vista vs Ubuntu)

  • Matthijs Groen · 1 year ago
I hear this a lot. People totally messing up the ubuntu config to have their precious effects and then updates destroying their system. I use ubuntu in pretty much default standard because it's nice and clean. I need a system that makes me productive. And then it loves you back. Updates never failed me. The distro upgrade from feisty to gutsy was also fine.

    Hi Matthijs,

I don't actually have any special effects on my Ubuntu. I only configured my hardware. I am running on a dual processor and 64-bit architecture, so as you may know, there is a lot to configure to get things working properly.

Welcome to my site btw :)

Ubuntu is great, it's a shame it's not stable on your system.

By the way, I've been reading your blog for a while now and admiring how well you manage to keep it updated - keep up the good posts.

    Hi Paul!

It's great to hear that I'm actually attracting people to my blog, and thanks for the props :)

Just out of curiosity, where did you first find my blog?

In regards to Ubuntu, I absolutely love it. What makes it even better is the community support. Everyone is so friendly there!

For that reason and others, I never (I repeat) NEVER run updates. I have heard too many horror stories of it, and plus, when I have a working system, I never see the need to upgrade.

But might that become a security issue? Aren't you worried since you're really into security and privacy?

It could potentially become a risk if somebody finds a hole in Apache or SSH, but othewise, I should be fine.

    Hi,

Very nice post. I am running Ubuntu and XP on my machine in a dual boot configuration for the past 18 months. I love how Ubuntu work, but have some applications that I still have to use XP every now and then. In regards of Vista, I don't believe how many times it have to crash per day at my friends machine LOOOOOOOOOOOL. Any way a good comparison between Vista & Ubuntu that we have came up with and would be nice to share on here can be found at http://itcomparison.com/OS/vistavsubuntu/vistav...

It covers many features of Ubuntu and how it compare to Vista and show the advantages of each. It can very informative for people planning to get their next OS.

    Enjoy,
